3/19 | Intermediate Flourishing Local Class | SLC, UT
MARCH 19, 2020 | 6-9pm | Draper, UT
Learn how to add flourishes to your modern calligraphy, brush lettering or hand-lettering! Instructor Melissa Esplin will take you through the foundations of flourishing and how to apply it to your lettering/calligraphy work. This is an in-person local class. See the online class if you'd like to learn calligraphy online.
In this 3 hour workshop, we'll cover how to write out drills, practice foundations of flourishing and how they apply to both upper and lowercase letters. You will have the tools necessary to flourish your work AND make it readable.
- 3 hours of instruction
- Materials (paper, pencil, handouts, paper and pouch)
- Post-class email with links to helpful resources and printable handouts
Intermediate skill levels (and lefties!!) are welcome. Prior experience with brush-lettering, pointed pen or script hand-lettering is required. The material covered will not be tool-specific so all lettering backgrounds are welcome. Beginners are okay, but must have taken a prior class. Melissa will not be covering proper grip, letterforms, word structure and flow like she does in her beginning classes.
Infants in arms are welcome. We're happy to provide you with a special space with privacy for feeding your child. Please contact us beforehand so we can make the appropriate adjustments to the classroom layout.
Please contact the organizer if you have dietary restrictions. We're happy to make accommodations.
No refunds. If you're unable to make it to the workshop, you can transfer your ticket to one of Melissa's online classes or you may sell your ticket to someone else. Attendees are responsible for selling tickets and notifying Melissa of any changes. Purchasing this local class does not give you access to the online class.
This workshop has room for 12 students. Sign up early to make sure to get your spot! The class is organized in a series of demonstrations and work time with one-on-one critiques, adjustments and encouragement.
About the instructor:
Melissa Esplin has loved hand-lettering since she was very young. She started a stationery business at 15 and from there her passion for design and letters has only grown. She earned a BFA in Painting & Drawing at BYU with an unofficial “minor” in graphic design. She started out self-taught in calligraphy (it was bad) but has since taken classes from Jake Weidmann, Kathy Milici, Cora Pearl and Michael Sull to name a few. She’s been doing pen and ink since 2009 when she inherited her great-great grandfather's sign painting resource book.
