Beginner Modern Calligraphy Local Class | SLC, UT | May 18
May 18, 2019 | 6-9pm | Michael's Crafts Draper
Learn an elegant way to write, create and exchange mail with friends and family! Instructor Melissa Esplin will take you through the foundations of pointed pen calligraphy and apply it to a modern, free-spirited style. This is an in-person local class. See the online class if you'd like to learn calligraphy online.
In this 3 hour workshop, we'll cover how to use the pen, manipulate pen and ink, troubleshoot issues, write out drills, practice a lowercase alphabet and (time allowing) attack uppercase letters. You will leave with a knowledge of proper grip, posture, orientation, materials and a basic modern alphabet. You will have the tools necessary to start your journey mastering modern calligraphy and how to maintain your practice beyond class.
- 3 hours of instruction
- Materials (holder, nib, ink, paper, pencil, handouts, paper and pouch)
- Post-class email with links to helpful resources and printable handouts
All skill levels (and lefties!!) are welcome. If you have prior experience, please come prepared with samples of your work and any questions you may have. Melissa will work one-on-one with you to make sure that you're adequately challenged throughout the class. No prior experience necessary.

This workshop has room for 12 students. Sign up early to make sure to get your spot! The class is organized in a series of demonstrations and work time with one-on-one critiques, adjustments and encouragement.
We'll be attacking this modern calligraphy alphabet. Your practice can look just this beautiful. See you there!
About the instructor:
Melissa Esplin has loved hand-lettering since she was very young. She started a stationery business at 15 and from there her passion for design and letters has only grown. She earned a BFA in Painting & Drawing at BYU with an unofficial “minor” in graphic design. She started out self-taught in calligraphy (it was bad) but has since taken classes from Jake Weidmann, Kathy Milici, Cora Pearl and Michael Sull to name a few. She’s been doing pen and ink since 2009 when she inherited her great-great grandfather's sign painting resource book.
